Join us in person or on Zoom Thursday, November 21 at 6:15 p.m. Dennis Waters @lichens4u will speak on, “Using DNA Sequencing to Untangle the Taxonomy of Lichens.”

Dennis writes:
"Despite two centuries of lichenology in the Mid-Atlantic region, there remain many unresolved questions. Several years of recent fieldwork in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, have turned up taxonomic problems that can’t be answered with the traditional methods of lichenology. A member grant from the Philadelphia Botanical Club has allowed some of these problems to be addressed using modern molecular techniques. This talk will look at several examples of these problems and how DNA sequencing goes where other methods don’t."

The club meets at the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, 100 North 20th St, Philadelphia (the northwest corner of Arch and 20th Streets). Our meeting is in the PHS McLean Library on the ground floor, which is wheelchair accessible.

7:30 p.m. The meeting ends, and the McLean Library closes.

7:30 p.m. For those who would like to join us and our speaker for dinner, we will dine at Thanal Indian Tavern (1939 Arch St.) at the corner of 20th and Arch Streets, directly across the street from our meeting.

On the day before the meeting, we will email the Zoom link. Non-members who wish to log in to the meeting should contact us at philbotclub at gmail.com during the week before the meeting. Our meetings are free and open to the public.

Two grant opportunities coming up next month - one for students and one open to all members of the Philadelphia Botanical Club!

Applications are due December 2 for members and December 15 for students. Applications are just a few pages, and all the details are on the club website. See the link in our bio for our website and navigate to Grants for more info.

Welcome back! Philadelphia Botanical Club meetings

Welcome back! Philadelphia Botanical Club meetings resume next week with our annual fall kick-off: reports on summer botanizing. Come join us virtually on Zoom on Thursday, September 26th at 6:15 p.m.

Our virtual meeting will feature members’ botanical photos from the summer. We will not meet in person this month, but look for in-person meetings with a Zoom option starting in October.

Our club president Steve Jones will begin the meeting with a review of Club activities for the coming year. He will suggest ways for members to participate in our field program, lecture series, and club leadership.

At 6:30 p.m. we will share photos and reports of summer botanizing.

We would like to see your photos! If you plan to share some, email them to jbr.botanical at gmail.com before the 26th.

On the day of the meeting, we will email instructions for logging into the meeting on Zoom. If you do not receive the link by 2:00 p.m., please contact us at philbotclub@gmail.com.

This Thursday! Come join the May meeting of the Philadelphia Botanical Club via Zoom on Thursday, May 23 at 7:30 p.m. Mary Ann Furedi and Scott Schuette will speak on Peatlands in Pennsylvania.

Peatlands are a unique group of wetlands. In Pennsylvania, they represent the near southern extent of boreal wetlands and provide habitat for a variety of more specialized flora and fauna.

Learn the interesting biodiversity of peatlands and what the ecologists and botanists at the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy are doing to better understand these systems!
